Lush Living

In Flower Now!

I spotted these potted bougainvilleasas in Darwin and loved the Mediterranean look of having them in pots. We have lots of climbing bougainvilleas in the nursery at the moment including dwarf Bambinos which are ideal for potting.

Sweet Scents

My two lovely frangipani trees did not flower this year :( . I miss the lovely scent that comes with them. I beleive it is the inconsistant weather we have had. Well instead I will have to admire this magnificent dark pink frangipani that I spotted in Bali recently.

Pick and Eat

Grow Gorgeous Lettuce

Grow leaf variety lettuces during Summer rather than head forming types. Picking the outer leaves shocks the lettuce into thinking is not big enough to go to seed. These types of lettuce are called "Pick and Eat". Pick and Eat varieties allow you to pick just the amount you need in your salad or sandwich and keeps the rest fresh on the plant.

Think Roses

It's time to start thinking about what roses you might like to plant in the garden this winter.

Maybe you could devote a garden bed or fence line to some roses. Think about grouping roses in similar colours like pinks, apricots and corals or colour blocking with one single colour. We have a block of about thirty yellow "Gold Bunny's" and it looks fab.

What' Happening in My Garden

Carex ( the fine brown grass) and dianella grasses are doing well in the dry heat.

Unusual Black Agapanthus are flowering.

The Kalamata Olive tree in the backyard is fruiting.

My eggplants are flowering and the white pearl eggplants are fruiting so we will be enjoyingg our favourite chicken and eggplant curry very soon.

Bring the outdoors in

 There are many benefits of having plants indoors. They help oxygenate the air, they look much better than fake plants and they make you feel good.

Living Colour!

Take inspiration from this alleyway in Italy. Try this at home by gathering miss-matched pots and wall baskets and filling them with flowering plants. Think Hydrangeas, dwarf bougainvilleas and geraniums for upright growth and blue lobelia and trailing petunias for hanging baskets.

Grow your own Bananas

Bananas require a full sun position for most of the day. A position close to a north facing wall is ideal this will create a micro-climate. Work the soil deeply over an area of about one square metre, incorporating lots of well-rotted compost or very old animal manure. After planting water thoroughly, apply a thick mulch to the worked area, keeping it away from contact with the stem of the plant. Cool Climate bananas are heavy feeders and as the plant grows apply fertiliser every six weeks.

Get Dirty!

Top up mulch around everything in the garden. It will help keep the roots cool and keep moisture where it is needed. Don't forget to mulch your pot plants too.

Beautiful Borders

A Bali garden I found on my travels.

There are some wonderful landscaped gardens in Bali. Dianella grasses are one species I noticed growing in abundance and they look great planted as a border . We stock a very similar native grass Dianella "Wyeena" . It is one of the hardiest variegated dianellas for tolerating frost, cold and dry weather. They require little maintenance and look great most of the year.
We also have a variegated mondo grass

 " Bali Stripe" It has finer foliage than the dianella and would be more suited to a shadier spot rather than full sun. Mondo grass "Bali Stripe" makes an attractive specimen or border plant.

Clip it!

The idea of having smooth topiary balls and mini manicured hedges combined with the texture of low growing grass looks so interesting. A grass such as Dianella "Little rev" or Lomandra " Seascape" both in blue shades would work well with English Box to imitate this idea.

Thai Resort Inspiration

 

We stayed here at Montra in Ko Samui Thailand. These photos capture
 the texture and earthiness of the gardens.
 I was so inspired by the way they plant in large bowls and place pebbles around the gardens.

Stone pots or planters make beautiful water features.

Love the swing chairs under the pergola.

Large Format pavers + pebbles looks great.

The key here is combining different hard surfaces. Extra large pavers, slate, pebbles combined together adds lots of interest.
